한국의 동성애자인권연대 친구들,
저는 육우당이라는 한국의 19세 게이청소년의 죽음에 관한 소식을 무거운 마음으로 접했습니다. 죽음은 언제나 충격입니다만, 특히 그의 성정체성과 관련하여 더이상 사회의 압력을 견디지 못하고 스스로의 목숨을 끊은 경우에는 그 충격이 더합니다. 이것은 우리 모두를 정말 분노하게 합니다. 우리는 제 3천년기에는 그들의 성정체성으로 인해 더이상의 젊은이들이 억압을 느끼지 않기되기를 바랍니다. 이것은 정말 있어서는 안되는 일입니다. 이세상에는 여전히 우리들을 억합하는 종교와 다른 단체들과 많은 개인들이 존재합니다. 너무나 아이러니한 일은 이 종교들이 바로 사랑에 대해서 가르치기로 예정되어 있다는 것입니다.
저는 특별히 육우당이 그의 300달러정도의 돈을 유서와 함께 남기며 그 돈을 동성애자들의 해방을 위해 써달라고 말하며, 형제자매들의 노력만이 다음 청소년동성애자들의 삶에 영향을 줄 수 있다고 말했다는 것에서 깊은 감동을 느꼈습니다. 저는 육우당을 추도하기 위해 우리가 해야하는 가장 중요한 일은 바로 보다 더 높은 결의로 성적소수자들에 대한 차별에 맞서 싸우는 것이라고 믿습니다. 아마 저희 단체 이번에 아시아에서 처음으로 성적소수자 컨퍼런스를 개최한다는 소식을 들으셨을 것입니다. 저는 마닐라에서 11월에 열리는 저희 단체의 이 세계 컨퍼런스가 육우당과 같은 생명을 구할 수 있는 또 한번의 전진의 기회가 되기를 기대합니다.
육우당과 육우당이 사랑했던 모든 사람들에게 저희 단체와 저의 깊은 슬픔과 애도의 뜻을 전합니다.

Dear Friends at Lesbian Bi-sexual and Trans-sexual Human Rights Federation (LGBTHRF) in Seoul, South Korea,
I heard the death news of Okoodang, 19 year's old gay boy, with a heavy heart. Death is always shocking, but when a young person kills himself because he cannot cope with the pressure put upon him because of his sexuality, it is more than shocking. It makes us all angry too. I hoped that at the third millennium we will have a world in which young people are not put under pressure which they cannot cope with because of their sexuality. Alas this is not the case. There are still organised religions and other institutions and many individuals in the world oppress us. The irony is that these religions are suppose to be about love!
I am particularly touched with the fact that Okoodang left all his savings of $300 at his will and said "please use this money for liberation of sexual minorities...brothers and sisters, please don't forget that only your efforts can give impact for our next sexual minority generation". I believe the best thing we can do in the memory of Okoodang is to fight discrimination against lgbt people with more determination. You may be aware that ILGA is organising a first ever Asian lgbt Conference. I hope next ILGA World Conference in Manila during the second week of November 2003 will be a step towards saving the lives other Okoodangs.
