[성명] 한국의 성소수자들은 미얀마의 군부 쿠데타를 규탄하며 민주주의를 위해 투쟁하는 민중들을 지지하고 연대합니다.
미얀마에서 발생한 쿠데타 이후 군부의 반인권적 행태와 폭력이 도를 넘고 있습니다. 매일 같이 나오는 사망자 소식과 군부의 폭거가 뉴스로 전해집니다. 동시에 우리는 미얀마 민중의 투쟁과 연대의 소식 또한 매일 같이 전해 듣고 있습니다.
과거 군부 독재에 저항하며 민중투쟁의 역사를 지나온 한국의 시민사회 또한 미얀마에서 이어지는 투쟁에 연대하고 지지합니다. 무엇보다 우리는 저항의 행렬 속에 미얀마의 노동자들과 농민, 소수민족들이 자신의 권리를 주장하는 가운데 사회의 일원으로 거리에 나온 성소수자들의 모습 또한 접하게 되었습니다. ‘동성애금지법’이라고 불리는 형법 377조항이 존재하는 미얀마의 상황 속에서 성소수자는 ‘전생에 천륜을 어긴 탓’에 잘못 태어났다는 차별적인 편견을 오랫동안 받아야 했다고 들었습니다. 하지만 그 속에서도 미얀마의 성소수자들은 스스로를 드러내고 자신의 권리를 요구하며 변화를 만들어오고 있습니다. 시위 중 총을 맞아 세상을 떠난 희생자를 시민들이 성소수자로서 추모하고 애도하는 모습은, 생사를 통과하며 군부와 싸우는 당신들이 어떻게 혐오를 불식하는지, 어떻게 성소수자를 동료 시민으로 대하며 평등을 위한 연대를 실천하고 있는가를 보여줍니다.
우리는 저마다 다른 성적 지향과 다른 민족, 다른 정치적 이념을 가지고 있을지 모릅니다. 하지만 부당한 군부 독재에 항거하는 상황으로부터 누구라도 존엄을 인정받고 평등해야 한다는 지고의 교훈을 당신들의 절박한 투쟁으로부터 매일같이 배우고 있습니다. 시민을 향해 곤봉을 휘두르고 총을 겨누는 공권력의 폭압에 맞서 목숨 걸고 싸우는 현장에서 타인의 안녕을 살피는 모습들을 전해 듣습니다. 더불어 국제사회의 지지를 요청하며 함께 싸울 수 있는 투쟁의 방식을 고안해나가는 모습은, 지금 한국에서 벌어지는 부당한 현실에 맞서 싸우는 이들에게도 큰 힘과 영감을 줍니다.
어떤 권력도 민중의 동의를 거치지 않고 누군가를 부당하게 희생시키면서 정당성을 얻을 수 없습니다. ‘권리를 시민에게’를 외치며 매일같이 생사를 무릅쓰고 거리에 나와 희생된 이를 추모하고 군부 권력을 규탄하며 국제사회에 연대를 호소하는 미얀마 민중들의 투쟁은, 이미 민주주의의 가치를 높이며 제 권리를 행사하고 있습니다. 우리는 미얀마 군부의 쿠데타를 규탄하며 미얀마 민주주의를 위해 싸우다 희생된 이들을 추모합니다. 미얀마 민중들의 투쟁을 지지하고 연대하며 평등을 실천하는 투쟁을 끝까지 응원하겠습니다.

[Statement] Sexual Minorities in Korea Are Here in Solidarity with the People of Myanmar and Their Outcry for Democracy
- Myanmar’s Military Must Listen to its People and Step Down Immediately
Weeks have passed since the people have gathered to voice their wholehearted yearning for a democratic Myanmar. It has also been weeks since the military government has exerted armed violence against the protesters, which has already taken over 140 lives. Despite the military’s efforts to silence and control the media, the people of Myanmar have been relentlessly communicating with the rest of the world, holding us witness to the state suppression currently taking place in the streets. As Koreans, with our own history of struggles for democracy against a military government, we reply with a firm declaration of our solidarity with the protesters and the movement towards democracy in Myanmar. We condemn the coup d’état of the Myanmar military. We mourn the lives brutally taken by the armed forces while fighting for their rights.
What we find mesmerizing is the unity about which the protest has brought. The masses that have taken over the streets of Myanmar consist of a diverse array of those deemed powerless: the workers, the farmers, the ethnic minorities, and the sexual minorities. Myanmar criminalizes homosexuality with Section 377 of the Penal Code 1861 and further stigmatizes sexual minorities based on a belief that their gender/sexual identities are a result of moral transgressions in their previous lives. We wholeheartedly support those who have decided to ‘come out’ to the streets against all odds and are fiercely fighting for their rights and cracking the system that has long oppressed them. We have witnessed how the masses came together to mourn for their fellow queer protester who had been shot by the armed police by acknowledging and commemorating their input in the movement as a member of the Myanmar society. These actions of solidarity have demonstrated how they collectively practice the values of justice and equality, the exact values for which they are protesting.
We may not share the same sexual or gender identities, ethnicities, or even political ideologies. However, there is much to be learned from their commitment to holding human dignity and equality above all other values. We admire their courage to continue their struggle to protect those values even in life-or-death situations caused by the military’s inhumane state violence. The care they share with fellow protestors when bullets may come their way at any minute demonstrates that actions speak more than words. Furthermore, the ways in which they have engaged the international society in their fight for a democratic, equal, and fair society are inspirations for activists here in Korea who are also fighting our own fights against social injustice.
No person or group may rise to power by bypassing approvals from and unfairly sacrificing the lives of the very people they seek to represent. Protesters are risking their lives to shout and chant ‘Rights to the People!’, to condemn the military government, and to commemorate those who lost their lives in the process. By doing so, they are already practicing their rights as citizens of a democratic society and asking the government to meet them where they are. It is time for the military to lower their guns and humbly respond to the people’s demands.
We are and will be in solidarity with the protesters in Myanmar and their values for equality and justice.
